Los contaminantes orgnicos persistentes (POPs) comprenden una amplia variedad de compuestos de diferente estructura y usos. Caractersticas comunes a todos ellos es su resistencia a la degradacin, semivolatilidad y lipofilicidad. Dando lugar a que el compuesto tienda a bioconcentrarse desde el medio acuoso hacia el organismo con su posterior biomagnificacin a travs de las cadenas trficas. El origen de estos compuestos es antropognico. Se empezaron a introducir de forma importante en el medio ambiente alrededor de los aos 4050, cuando se fabricaron y usaron como aislantes (p.e., PCBs), insecticidas (p.e., DDT) o fungicidas (p.e., HCB). Tambin son coproductos de generacin no deseada en una amplia variedad de procesos de fabricacin o combustin. Debido a sus caractersticas fsicoqumicas estos compuestos se han distribuido por todos los ecosistemas y tambin han entrado en la dieta humana, acumulndose en los tejidos de las personas. Los seres humanos nacidos a partir de los aos 50 vivimos desde la concepcin hasta la muerte en contacto permanente con estos contaminantes transmitidos por el aire, agua, alimentos y suelo.
