Los sistemas de informacin geogrficas (SIG) representan nuevas formas para realizar estudios sobre la ubicacin de Campos Petroleros, Pozos petroleros, Produccin de pozos petroleros, entre otros. Los SIG debido a la gran cantidad de herramientas que contiene, permiten manipular, procesar, analizar y relacionar grandes volmenes de datos dentro de un componente espacial asociado. As mismo, permite la aplicacin de mtodos y anlisis estadsticos y matemticos para tener una visin ms aproximada a la realidad de las variables a considerar en diversos estudios. Los Campos Petroleros son de gran importancia en cuanto a que representan una fuente de investigacin, referente a cmo se puede incrementar la produccin de los pozos sin afectar la formacin o acabar la vida til del mismo. Es por ello que se hace necesaria la sistematizacin de la informacin acerca de estas reas con el fin de favorecer medidas de manejo ms eficientes. Mediante el uso de un SIG y en particular sistemas de posicionamiento global (GPS), se realiz un estudio para determinar la distribucin de los Campos Petroleros y los Pozos que los conforman.
