Nach einem missglckten Fluchtversuch wurde er, kaum achtzehnjhrig, als politisch Gefangener in dem berchtigten Gefngnis von Aiud zu der ersten Freiheitsstrafe verurteilt. Danach folgten jahrzehntelange Repressalien und Bespitzelungen durch den Geheimdienst, die sich vor allem nach seiner persnlichen Untersttzung der Charta 77 und deren rumnischem Verfechter Paul Goma vehement verstrkten. Sein Freiheitsdrang blieb ungebrochen und nach etlichen weiteren gescheiterten Fluchtversuchen wurde ihm die Ausreise in den Westen gestatten. In Rumnien wurde er jedoch als "Staatsfeind" in den Akten gefhrt. Erst der politische Umsturz in Rumnien ermglichte ihm, seine alte Heimat wieder zu sehen.
