They are the temperate zone equivalent of rain forests, serving vital lifesustaining functions in waterquality renovation, aquatic ecosystem productivity, and biodiversity, as well as providing benefits such as flooddamage protection, shoreline stabilization, and commercial and recreational fisheries.
