She began writing her account immediately after arriving in the United States. She worked as a nurse in Providence, Rhode Island, until her retirement. In the Hell of Auschwitz was first published in 1963. Newman passed away in 2008.

I was eager to read Judith Sternberg Newman’s memoir, but I was disappointed by the pacing. Some of the chapters felt dragged out and it took away from the impact of her story. It’s an important narrative, but it could have been more concise.
