Die vorliegende Arbeit geht auf zahlreiche Diskussionen mit Studenten an den Universitten Berlin und Hamburg zurck, an denen ich zwischen 1976 und 1987 Lehrauftrge im Rahmen des politischen Seminars hatte, sowie auf Disskussionen an Akademien in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Es berei te te Schwierigkeiten, den Studenten eine geeignete Fachliteratur zum Thema "Indien" zugnglich zu machen. Abgesehen davon, dass die englischsprachige Literatur ber den Indischen Subkontinent weitaus dominiert, was fr die Studierenden mit gewissen Problemen verbunden ist, ist sie in Deutschland sprlich vertreten. Ich musste z . T. Bcher und wei teres Lehrmaterial aus Indien und Grossbritannien direkt beschaf fen. So kam im Laufe der Jahre eine Sammlung von Informatio nen zustande, die mich dazu anregte, diese ursprnglich als "Parteienlandschaft Indiens" konzipiert zu publizie ren. Eine Skizze zur Nationbildung aus der Kolonialgeschichte abgeleitet, soll dem Leser die politische Grundlage des heutigen Indiens verdeutlichen. Die Frage, wie es mglich ist, dass das verhltnismssig arme und riesige, demokrati sche Indien im Vergleich zu vielen diktatorisch regierten Lndern der Dritten Welt relativ gut bestehen kann, veran lasste mich, verschiedene Gesellschaftsaspekte Indiens in der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart zu durchleuchten. Damit wurden zugleich die stabilisierenden Faktoren des sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Lebens Indiens heraus kristallisiert. Somit entstand aus verschiedenen Diskussionen, Anregungen und berlegungen heraus diese Arbeit. Der Dank des Verfas sers gilt Herrn Prof. Dr. Winfried Steffani am politischen Seminar der Universitt Hamburg, der mir durch seine kritische Durchsicht des Manuskripts mit Rat und Tat als Guru zur Seite stand.
