Die vorliegende Arbeit beruht auf empirischen Daten, die im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes "Arbeit und Leistung in lokalen Beschaftigungsinitiativen (AlLBI)" an der Hochschule fUr offentliche Verwaltung Bremen im Friihjahr 1987 erhoben wurden. An der Datenerhebung, Vorbereitung der Untersu chung und ersten Auswertung waren neben mir und einigen Mitarbeitem aus dem Netzwerk Selbsthilfe Bremen Nordniedersachsen vor allem Jiirgen Sosna und Silvia Schlake beteiligt. Die inhaltliche Auswertung und Aufbe reitung der mit dem Abschlu13bericht (vgl. Effinger u.a. 1988) vorgelegten Daten konnte ich im Forschungsprojekt "Arbeit und Bildung im intermedi iiren Sektor" (ABIS) des Forschungsschwerpunktes "Arbeit und Bildung" an der Universitat Bremen mit Klaus Korber, Reiner Drechsel und Bodo Voigt fortsetzen. Meinen Kollegen und Kolleginnen, die mit mir in den Forschungsprojekten zusammengearbeitet und gestritten haben, wie auch den vielen Mitarbeitem in den untersuchten Projekten habe ich zu danken. Mein besonderer Dank gilt meiner Frau Birgit Pfau Effinger. Sie hat mir nicht nur mit vielen kritischen Anmerkungen, sondem auch mit viel Geduld und Uebe die Fertigstellung dieser Arbeit ermoglicht.
