Diese Wiederkehr, die sich zu einem Triumph auswchst, lsst sich sowohl fr das literarisch ambitionierte wie fr das volkstmliche Theater konstatieren. Eine Vielzahl von Texten und zahllose Dramen dokumentieren die Intensitt und Macht der neuen Mode. Aus ihnen spricht zugleich die Faszination, die von der wiederaufgekommenen Schicksalsthematik um 1800 ausging.Die Historiker sehen in dieser erneuten Hinwendung zum Schicksal und zum Irrationalen seit langem ein Symptom fr eine tiefere geistige und kulturelle Krise; eine Erschtterung, deren Verkettung mit den damaligen politischen und sozialen Umwlzungen mehr als wahrscheinlich ist. Keine der bisher vorgeschlagenen Deutungen dieses Sachverhalts konnte bislang jedoch ganz berzeugen. In den hier prsentierten Untersuchungen wird eine kritische, supranationale Sichtung des literarhistorischen Phnomens 'Schicksalsdrama' vorgenommen. Als Ausgangspunkt dienen dabei mehrere Studien zum philosophischen und ideologischen Hintergrund sowie zur literarischen Tradition. In vierzehn Beitrgen erfolgt eine genaue Betrachtung des Fatums in der 'Hochliteratur' und im eigentlichen, 'trivialen' Schicksalsdrama der Literaturen Europas. Der vorliegende Band versteht sich als Materialsammlung, auf deren Basis eine fundierte berprfung der Thesen zum europischen Schicksalsdrama mglich wird. Review Allen Beitrgen sind wissenschaftliches Niveau und philologische Sorgfalt zu bescheinigen. Wie bei den vorangehenden Bnden besticht auch bei dem vorliegenden Band die sorgfltige Anordnung der Einzelreferate nicht nur zu nationalliterarischen Gruppen, sondern auch zu direkt aufeinander bezogenen Fallstudien einzelner Aspekte.
