El libro se enfoca en la problemtica de las comunidades lingsticas minoritarias de Venezuela, a travs de un recorrido por sus antecedentes histricos, polticos, legales y culturales. En la primera parte, se caracteriza el proceso inmigratorio venezolano, desde la poca del descubrimiento hasta nuestros das. Luego se procede a describir las cinco comunidades minoritarias ms representativas del pas: la italiana, portuguesa, rabe, china y alemana. Se presentan sus antecedentes histricos, su motivacin para emigrar, su incorporacin a la vida nacional, el grado de su integracin lingsticocultural, sus asociaciones, su lealtad hacia su cultura y lengua nativa, la presencia de sta ltima en la educacin venezolana y, finalmente, la actitud de la sociedad receptora hacia la comunidad respectiva. Las reflexiones de la parte final del libro dejan abierta la interrogante sobre el futuro de las comunidades minoritarias en el territorio venezolano, el cual se perfila como incierto, puesto que sin aportes migratorios importantes y con el incremento de los contactos lingsticos y culturales, estas comunidades podran mermar, diluyndose paulatinamente en la sociedad adoptiva.
