Product Description Offering a complete overview of the most exciting discoveries and developments in this field, innovations in Earth Sciences presents an introductory overview of key developments in the earth sciences since 1900; a detailed chronology of twentiethcentury milestones in earth sciences; biographical sketches of influential scientists in the field and their achievements; annotated listings of related organizations, works for further reading, and Web sites; and a comprehensive dictionary of nearly 800 terms and concepts related to the earth sciences. This accessible handbook will be valuable both to general readers and to students just beginning study of the earth sciences. From Library Journal The third title in the publisher's competent "Innovations in Science" series, this work begins with an introductory essay that provides a concise history of earth sciences in the 20th century while highlighting important, fieldshaping discoveries. Following is an extensive chronology of events from 1900 to 1998; biographical sketches of 30 scientists who have made significant contributions to the field; a directory of over 40 organizations, including associations, research institutes, and academic departments; and an annotated bibliography of selected works and web sites. The largest section of the book, however, is a clearly written dictionary of terms and concepts, some of which receive fairly lengthy entries accompanied by illustrations. Although not as comprehensive as Sciences of the Earth (LJ 8/98) or The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Earth Sciences (Oxford Univ., 1990), this source is useful for those unfamiliar with the wide range of earth science disciplines.
