Curious about what had happened to the social activism of the 1960s, and in response to the recent interest in ""faithbased initiatives."" Mark Masse set out to identify people who had continued their social activism in the context of a religious commitment to work in aid of the poor and the disenfranchised. Inspired to Serve is a collection of interviews with, among others, a Jesuit priest working in a poor neighborhood in Portland, an IrishAmerican nun working with migrants and others in central Florida, and a black Episcopalian minister on Chicago's Southside. What Masse found suggests that this generation of social activists is fading away, and it is uncertain who will take their place. In the interviews, Masse explores a social movement and an era in American life, examining how these individuals try to balance their secular and spiritual lives in the face of challenging work.
