Das Buch tiber Integralgleichungen, das ich hier vorlege, ist aus sechs doppelstiindigen Vorlesungen entstanden, die ich im AuBeninstitut der Technischen Hochschule Berlin im Friihjahr 1937 gehalten habe. Solche Vorlesung n haben den Zweck, Herren, die mitten in der Praxis stehen, in einen ihnen weniger bekannten Gegenstand einzufiihren und zu zeigen, wie man ihn verwenden kann. Der Besuch zeigte, daB fiir Integralgleichungen bei Ingenieuren und Physikern Interesse besteht, und so folgte ich de!ll Angebot der Verlagsbuchhandlung Julius Springer, die Vorlesungen herauszugeben. Das Buch soIl durchaus den Charakter der Vorlesungen behalten. Daraus folgt, daB es im iiblichen Sinn kein Lehrbuch ist und noch weniger ein Handbuch, auch nicht ein solches der Angewandten Mathematik. Es soIl in den Gegenstand einfiihren, und zwar vor aHem Manner der Praxis, denen eine schOne Anwendung wichtiger ist als ein langer Existenz beweis. Darum stehen am Beginn stets einzelne bestimmte Aufgaben, auch sind die Methoden der Rechnung betont, die Gedanken rein mathe matischer Art sind herausgearbeitet, die Beweise fehlen nicht, soweit sie' zum Verstandnis wichtig sind, aber sie kommen oft spater. auch sind bewuBt Liicken gelassen, doch nur solche, die der Mathematiker emp findet; ich hoffe auBerdem, sie tiberall angegeben zu haben. Daher kann auch der Student der Mathematik das Buch benutzen, namentlich den ersten Teil; er moge nur die Originalarbeit von ERHARDT SCHMIDT dane ben legen.
