Este libro naci del siguiente interrogante: cmo se fue configurando histricamente el intelectual y por qu distintos sujetos sociales se fueron asociando con dicha figura? Para acercarnos a una respuesta, en lugar de centrarnos en las tradicionales de figuras del literato o el crtico cultural, elegimos aquellos que de un modo u otro hacen de la poltica su praxis y su objeto de reflexin. Por ello, optamos por construir un campo intelectual en ese espacio de interseccin entre la academia y la poltica donde los representantes del pensamiento poltico y social y las Ciencias Sociales en Argentina viven una vida casi anfibia. Pero un campo no se limita a posiciones en una configuracin de poder. Tambin requiere de un concepto que estructure las relaciones de sentido. Y en el proceso de institucionalizacin acadmica de la Sociologa y la Ciencia Poltica en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, la democracia es ese concepto. Y es as, porque la democracia no solamente es interpelada por la realidad poltica argentina, sino tambin porque ella hace posible un horizonte de inteligibilidad para la praxis poltica de quienes persistan en autodefinirse como intelectuales.
