Es ist zu beobachten, dass Grounternehmen und mittlerweile auch mittelstndische Unternehmen gezwungen sind, weltweite Aktivitten zu unterhalten. Es ist zu einer Alltglichkeit geworden, dass Unternehmen internationale, strategische Allianzen bilden. Ebenso hat in jngster Zeit die Zahl der Unternehmensfusionen, sowohl im Banken als auch im Telekommunikationsbereich, deutlich zugenommen. Ziel ist es, das berleben der eigenen Unternehmung unter einer Beibehaltung eines Maximums an Selbststndigkeit, in Zeiten eines immer strker werdenden Konkurrenzdrucks, gewhrleisten zu knnen(2).
