This book examines how the news media in general, and investigative journalism in particular, interprets environmental problems and how those interpretations contribute to the shaping of a discourse of risk that can compete against the omnipresent and hegemonic discourse of modernisation in Chinese society.

This book really opened my eyes to the challenges China faces with modernization and environmental problems. The investigative journalism approach makes the complex topics much more engaging. I found the case studies particularly insightful!

Not What I Expected
I was hoping for a broader overview, but the book goes deep into specific cases without much context for the average reader. A few sections seemed dry and uninviting. I think it could be a good resource for researchers, but it wasn’t for me.

Interesting but a Bit Dense
While I appreciate the depth of the content, some parts felt a bit too technical for me. I wanted to learn more about environmental issues in China, but it took me a while to get through some chapters. Still, it’s a worthwhile read if you’re really into this topic.
