In this study of AngloNorman intervention in Ireland during the reign of Henry II (115489), Flanagan explores the origins of the political link between Ireland and the English crown. She focuses on the reasons why Diarmait Mac Murchada, the exiled king of Leinster, hired AngloNorman mercenaries to help him regain his kingdom; why AngloNorman settlers from South Wales accepted his offer of employment in Ireland; and why this in turn provoked a reaction from King Henry II, who intervened in person in Ireland in 117172. Drawing on evidence from both 12thcentury Irish and AngloNorman sources, Flanagan bridges the artificial division between the preNorman and postNorman periods in Ireland.
