Ihre geostrategisch wichtige Lage hat sie auch nach dem Zusammenbruch der UdSSR beibehalten, als Bollwerk gegen den islamischen Fundamentalismus' sowie als Militrsttzpunkt gegenber dem Irak. Die Trkei wurde auch als das Tor zu den neuen unabhngigen Staaten im Kaukasus mit ihren riesigen Vorrten an Bodenschtzen angesehen. Vor allem wurde der Trkei beim 'Great Game' des 21. Jahrhunderts um die lvorkommen in Aserbaidschan eine wichtige Rolle beigemessen, welche sie jedoch nicht in angemessenem Umfang ausfllen konnte. Die Versuche der Trkei, in den TurkRepubliken und in Aserbaidschan als Fhrungsmacht aufzutreten und ihren Einflu zu steigern, sind fehlgeschlagen, z.T. aufgrund des Mangels an Kapital aber auch aufgrund unrealistischer auenpolitischer Zielsetzungen. Die Beziehungen der Trkei zur EU verschlechtern sich seit 1995 zunehmend. Den Hhepunkt erreichten die Unstimmigkeiten Ende 1997, als bekannt wurde, da die Trkei bei der ersten Erweiterungsrunde in die EU nicht dabei sein wird. Nach diesem Beschlu der EU wandte sich die Trkei brskiert und enttuscht von der EU ab und blieb sogar als Protest der 'Europakonferenz' fern, welche Mitte Mrz 1998 in London abgehalten wurde. Als Konsequenz begab sich die Trkei auf die Suche nach einer neuen auenpolitischen Rolle, indem sie ihre Beziehungen zu den USA und zu Israel festigte, z.B. durch bevorzugte Vergabe von militrisch
