Lavery is the curator of ship technology at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. In this text, he explores the links between naval facts and naval fiction particularly the works of Patrick OBrian and C.S. Forester showing how the life of real naval heroes compares to that portrayed in novels and films. The text is fully illustrated throughout in b&w and color, and includes a foreword by Peter Weir, director of the 2003 film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World , starring Russell Crowe in the role of Jack Aubrey. I was looking for a lighter read but this book is quite academic. It goes deep into Jack Aubrey's commands which is informative but honestly a bit dry for my taste. Still, I appreciate the research that went into it.

Useful but a Bit Dense
This book has some great info but can be a bit overwhelming at times. It’s packed with historical context that’s great if you’re a die-hard fan, but I wish it had an easier-to-follow layout. Still worth it for the details!

Engaging Companion with Great Insights
I picked this up to deepen my understanding of the naval settings in O'Brian's work, and it definitely delivered. The historical notes help bring the stories alive, but it's not exactly a casual read. Worth the effort!

A Must-Read for O'Brian Fans!
If you're into Patrick O'Brian's novels, this companion is pure gold. The way it dives into Jack Aubrey's commands and the naval world is so insightful. I found myself referencing it while re-reading the series; it adds so much depth!
