Product Description When his seven years' wages in gold proves too heavy to carry, Jack trades it in for one thing after another until he arrives home emptyhanded but convinced he is a lucky man From School Library Journal PreSchoolGrade 3 Jack earns a piece of gold for seven years of hard work and "trades up" until he returns home to his mother emptyhanded, feeling that he is the luckiest man in the world. Bell has slightly adapted the original text, using more dialogue between Jack and the various people with whom he interacts. Tharlet begins her illustrations on the clovercovered endpapers. Her paintings feature roundfaced innocents, none of whom seems capable of actually tricking Jack out of his earnings. The shifting perspectives of each picture give readers a sense of the lad's journey through a countryside rich with earthy greens and browns. The overall tone is in keeping with the story's theme that, silly as he may seem, Jack is indeed a lucky fellow. Libraries that own Eugen Sopko's illustrated version of this tale, Lucky Hans (NorthSouth, 1986; o.p.), or Paul Galdone's Hans in Luck (Parents, 1980; o.p.) may want to add this to use for comparative studies. Others may find that one of these earlier versions is sufficient. Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, LaramieCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.
