In the past 40 years, sculptor and installation artist Jannis Kounellis has established himself as a unique presence in the world of contemporary art. His installations, whether temporary or semipermanent, set off a trail of associations and are a process of 'making strange.' A potent example is his 1969 installation of 12 live tethered horses in a gallery in Rome, Kounellis's adopted home, recalling the equestrian monuments of Roman antiquity. No conventional monograph, Stephen Bann's richly illustrated assessment traces Kounellis's origins and influences, from Russian Modernism to the Byzantine tradition to late modernism, and also examines the mechanisms underlying Kounellis's work, in particular his approach to space.
