Die hohe Wertschtzung japanischer Lacke und insbesondere qualittvoller alter Stcke (vieux laque du Japon) ist ein charakteristisches sthetisches Phnomen der franzsischen Kunst im 18. Jahrhundert. Wertvoller Japanlack wurde von der Oberschicht gesammelt, besonders geschtzte Einzelstcke, mit kostbaren Montierungen aus Edelmetall versehen, und alte Japanlackplatten, hufig den edelsten franzsischen Mbeln auffurniert. Die eingesetzten Lacktechniken bestechen durch ihren ungewhnlichen Variationsreichtum und die erstaunliche Przision der Ausfhrung.
