Puis il monte une expdition prs du Bhoutan, et entreprend ensuite un voyage au Tibet en suivant les sentiers vertigineux des contreforts de l'Himalaya. Gouverneur de Chandernagor, lorsque cet tablissement est pris par les Anglais en 1778, il s'enfuit cheval vers le sud, travers une rgion tribale inconnue, o il doit endurer des souffrances incroyables. Arriv Katak, il est fait prisonnier et ramen Calcutta. Voguant vers l'Europe, il doit abandonner son navire dans la mer Rouge la suite d'une tempte terrible. Dvor par la vermine, harcel par les Bdouins, il gagne le Nil puis Alexandrie, et l'Italie. Il arrive finalement Paris aprs avoir travers les Alpes sur une luge ! Ce livre est aussi un tmoignage capital sur la vraie nature de la prsence franaise en Inde aprs le renvoi de Dupleix et le dsastreux trait de Paris de 1763. La narration dtaille de l'exprience de JeanBaptiste Chevalier, fonde sur l'examen scrupuleux des sources franaises et anglaises, montre que l'quilibre des forces dans la pninsule Indienne avait dfinitivement chang et que la puissance franaise ne pouvait plus tre restaure.
