In diesen Worten, die Teil einer brieflichen uerung sind, die nach LUCCS Ausdruck einer bis zum nihilistischen Pessimismus' gesteigerten Skepsis ist, artikuliert sich Fontanes Wahrnehmung seiner Umgebung, etwa zu einer Zeit, da er mit der Geschichte der Elisabeth von Ardenne vertraut gemacht wird, die bekanntlich zum Auslser fr seinen bis dahin grten literarischen Erfolg wird Effi Briest. Es verwundert also nicht, dass in diesem Roman von weiten Teilen der Forschung eine starke gesellschaftskritische Komponente herausgearbeitet worden ist. Auf den folgenden Seiten soll versucht werden, diesen Aspekt in Fontanes Werk etwas genauer zu beleuchten, um einen Eindruck zu erhalten, was unter Gesellschaftskritik verstanden sein kann und wie sie sich bei ihm literarisch uert. Auch wenn MECKLENBURG betont, dass sthetische und gesellschaftsbezogene Betrachtung' bei Fontane nicht von einander zu trennen sind, mssen formale Gesichtspunkte hier vernachlssigt werden, die sich mit dem Reichtum sthetischer Besonderheiten im Werk des Autors befassen. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt stattdessen auf der inhaltlichen Seite, die der Frage nachgeht, welches Subjektverstndnis im Sptwerk des Fontanes, nicht nur gegen Ende seines Lebens, sondern auch am Ausgang des 19.Jahrhunderts im vorliegenden Text deutlich wird.
