Product Description When Jessica, a rambunctious sixmonthold pup, is introduced to the five kids, two grown dogs, and cat already residing in the Stevenson household, it seems as though Jessica may be one family member too many From Publishers Weekly Not content with a household that already includes five children and two dogs, the father of the family arrives home with a new puppy. The wiry black bundle, named Jessica, comes with a collar, some puppy chow and a crate, and isn't home for two minutes before she has a runin with one of the two older dogs in the family. Then Jessica tears through the house, slides on rugs, tinkles on the stairs and jumps on the beds, earning her the name 'blue streak.' But the worst problem comes at night, when Jessica is locked in her crate. Her howls and yips keep everyone from sleep, until the father takes the new puppy, literally, in hand. This refreshingly simple book, told from the child's point of view, is replete with all the frustration connected with owning a new pet yet allows the tender side of the story to shine through. Stevenson's distinctive watercolorsby turn genuinely funny and touchingare bursting with energy and bathed in generous applications of color. Ages 36. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal PreSchoolGrade 2 When a new puppy is introduced into a household of five children, two dogs, and a cat, bedlam ensues. The pup wreaks havoc throughout the house and alienates the other three pets as well. Finally, Dad comes to the rescue, and the situation is brought under control. Dog owners will readily identify with the situation and appreciate the humor as well as the ending that brings satisfaction to all. The story is enhanced by buoyant, colorful illustrations that have an energy equal to that of Jessica the pup. This seems to be a singleparent household, headed by a benign but ultimately responsible father. Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, N.Y.Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
