His real name was James Aitken, though he was better known as John the Painter. During the early months of the American Revolution, he wreaked havoc in England by performing acts of terror on behalf of America. In this first fulllength chronicle of the man who attempted to burn down royal navy yards across England, Jessica Warner paints a tart and entertaining portrait of the worlds first modern terrorist. At the height of the scare, King George III received daily briefings from his ministers, the Bow Street Runners were on the chase, newspapers printed sensational stories, and in Parliament a bill was rushed through to suspend habeas corpus. This is rollicking popular history with something for every reader: authentic 18thcentury atmosphere, timely social history, international political intrigue, terrorism, chase scenes, spies, a double agent or two, a jailhouse snitch, the king, a young woman innocently tending her sheep . . . and much more.

I picked up 'The Painter Terrorist' for my history-loving son. The artwork is vibrant and really brings the American Revolution to life in a new way. He’s hooked and can’t stop talking about it!

Not quite what I expected
The title caught my eye, but the book didn’t quite deliver on the excitement I was hoping for. It’s informative, but I found some parts a bit dry. Still, the illustrations are nice!

Disappointed with the depth
While 'The Painter Terrorist' is a cool concept, I expected more depth in the storytelling. The ideas are there, but they could have been explored further. A decent read but not as impactful as I'd hoped.

A unique historical narrative
This book is a fun read! I love how it combines art and history, making it feel fresh and engaging. The painting depictions are just spectacular. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy unique perspectives on history!

Great for art and history enthusiasts
I bought this for my sister who loves both art and the American Revolution. She’s really enjoyed it so far, especially the stories behind the paintings. A nice gift for a niche interest!
