Review''Imhof first came to Albuquerque in 1907. He later moved to Taos, and until his death in 1955, he devoted his life to painting Indians. Many of his paintings were donated to the University of New Mexico and are on permanent display in various buildings there. Other collections of his work are at the Harwood Museum in Taos and at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York. Despite this wealth of artwork in public collections, not much had been published about Imhof, but now this book gives a detailed account of his life and work and the times in which he lived. Reily was imminently qualified to write this book, because she and her family were close friends of Imhof during the last dozen years of his life. This is a fitting tribute to this artist.'' Robert R. White, New Mexico Book League Book Talk, April 1999''Joseph Imhof painted the Pueblo way of life for nearly a halfcentury, but for some reason he is not as wellknown as many other Taos artists. Nancy Hopkins Reily and Lucille Enix's biography presents an excellent survey of 'The Grand Old Man of the Pueblos' and an informative discussion of his canvasses and lithographs (the book contains 45 fullcolor and nearly 65 blackandwhite illustrations). Mr. Imhof's friendships with Mabel Dodge Luhan and Buffalo Bill Cody add flavor to a book of considerable interest for those who know and those who have not discovered this artist's work.'' Lee Milazzo, The Dallas Morning News, January 17, 1999''Biographer Nancy Reily spent time with Imhof during summers on her uncle's ranch in Abiquiu. She frames his life in vivid historical context. The book is not a fast read, rather more akin to hearty bread or homemade beertasty, dense and nourishing. Nancy Reily's book gently teaches history while depicting a singular, wholehearted man who absorbed what we love about New Mexico and gave it back to us. The color illustrations are worth a thousand words.'' Karen Meadows, New Mexico Magazine, January 1999Product DescriptionJoseph Imhof, a master lithographer and painter, recorded the American Pueblo Indians' way of life from 1907 to 1955. Unlike other New Mexico artists of that time, Imhof chose not to use his art to interpret the Pueblo Indians. Rather, his works present anthropological information with such authentic detail that the Pueblos recognized him as an authority on their customs and life. They called him the 'Grand Old Man of the Pueblos.' Nancy H. Reily chronicles the life and art of this master lithographer, inventor and selftaught artist who counted among his friends 'Buffalo Bill' Cody, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and E. Martin Hennings. Until now, this unique American painter has remained elusive, undiscovered by many, partly because he lived in the shadow of other artists and writers who made themselves more visible during the Golden Age of Taos, New Mexico. Yet Joseph Imhof's work will undoubtably leave as much of an impact as any other early American artist.About the AuthorNancy H. Reily is the recognized authority on Joseph Imhof through her personal acquaintance with the Imhofs. Mrs. Reily graduated from Southern Methodist University and lives in Lufkin, Texas where she developed a successful career in outdoor color portraiture. She is also the author of the photography book Classic Outdoor Color Portraits and Georgia O'Keeffe: A Private Friendship, both available from Sunstone Press. Her first book, I Am At An Age, was published in 1990.
