About the Author Geboren am 16.10.1752 in Bredenbeck bei Hannover; gestorben am 6.5.1796 in Bremen. Nach der Erziehung durch Hofmeister studierte Knigge 176972 Jura in Gttingen. 1772 erhielt er eine Anstellung als Hofjunker und Assessor der Kriegs und Domnenkasse in Kassel. 1777 wurde er weimarischer Kammerherr. Seine Ttigkeit fr den Illuminatenorden (178084) und sein Eintreten fr die Verwirklichung der Menschenrechte lieen den in unsicheren wirtschaftlichen Verhltnissen lebenden Kleinadligen bei seinen aristokratischen Gnnern ins Zwielicht geraten, fhrten schlielich zum Verlust des Vermgens und ntigten ihn zur Anpassung an brgerliche Lebensformen. Erst 1790 erhielt der inzwischen schwerkranke Knigge mit der Stelle als Oberhauptmann und Scholarch von Bremen die Mglichkeit zu einem von finanziellen Sorgen freien Leben.
