Le 24 septembre 1942, trois policiers franais viennent arrter Albert Grunberg, coiffeur juif migr roumain, son domicile, 14 rue des Ecoles Paris. Conscient du danger mortel qu'il court, il russit chapper la vigilance de ses gardiens et se rfugie dans une chambre du sixime tage de l'immeuble voisin o se tient son salon de coiffure. Jusqu'au 23 aot 1944, il ne quittera plus cette pice, protg par Madame Oudard, la concierge de l'immeuble, par de nombreux voisins et par son pouse Marguerite qui continue d'exploiter le salon. Au soixantime jour de sa rclusion, Albert Grunberg dcide de tenir un journal. Jusqu' la Libration de Paris, il crit la chronique d'un immeuble parisien sous l'Occupation. Ce journal, dont ce volume publie les principaux extraits, met en vidence, dans leurs dtails les plus quotidiens, les effets de la perscution subie par les Juifs sous l'Occupation. Ce document rare livre, au jour le jour, les angoisses et les espoirs d'un homme traqu qui rsiste au dsespoir par l'criture et l'humour.
