An authority on the military history of the Civil War, Professor Gallagher has authored Stephen Dodson Ramseur: Lees Gallant General and the National Geographic Guide to the Civil War National Battlefield Parks and edited Fighting for the Confederacy: The Personal Recollections of Gen. Edward Porter Alexander, which was a main selection of the History Book of the Month Club and winner of the 1990 Douglas Southall Freeman Award.In addition, he has published dozens of articles and essays on a wide range of Civil War topics in scholarly and popular journals. He has also edited eight collections of essays and documents and written scholarly introductions to nearly twentyfive reprints of Civil War memoirs and personal accounts. He is a past president of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites. Professor Gallagher is currently writing a biography of Confederate General Jubal Early, which will be published by the University of North Carolina Press.
