Der vorliegende Band umfat eine Zusammenschau von epochalen gesellschafts politischen Jugendkonzeptionen, pdagogischen Deutungen sowie kulturellen Selbstbildem von Jugend. Die Beitrge beschftigen sich mit vier verschiedenen Schwerpunkten, die sich jeweils am Schnittpunkt der Selbstverfgung und Deutung treffen und damit zu einer differenzierten Sichtweise beitragen. 'Selbstverfgung' meint die Selbstdarstellung und Organisation der Jugendlichen aus eigenem Vermgen 'Deutung' bezieht sich auf pdagogische und kul turelle Kommentierung. Das Buch verbindet eine Reihe von Sichtweisen, die sehr unterschiedliche Facetten des Phnomens 'Jugend' im Zeitverlauf dieses Jahrhunderts thematisieren. Die Gliederung der Beitrge richtet sich nach der chronologischen Reihenfolge der bercksichtigten Zeitepochen und den damit verbundenen Besonderheiten pdagogischer, politischer Sichtweisen oder aber jugendlicher Selbstthematisierungen. Der erste Schwerpunkt des Bandes behandelt das pdagogisch politische Selbstverstndnis in der Jugendverbandszeitschrift "Arbeiterjugend", Probleme der Selbstverwaltungsbemhungen proletarischer Jugendorganisationen, sowie das Jugendbild sozialpdagogisch orientierter katholischer Jugendforschung der Weimarer Republik. Im zweiten Schwerpunkt wird das Programm nationalsozia listischer Mdchenerziehung aufgegriffen und mit Erziehungsvorstellungen aus dem deutschen sozialistischen Exil kontrastiert. Die Situation Jugendlicher in der zeitgeschichtlichen Umbruchphase der letzten Kriegsjahre sowie pdago gisch politische Diskussionen in den kulturpolitischen Zeitschriften am Ende der vierziger Jahre stehen im Mittelpunkt des dritten Themenbereichs des Buches. Abschlieend geht es schlielich um die Aktualisierung jugendkulturel ler Stilelemente und um die Kommerzialisierung der Jugendphase.
