Die vorliegende Studie beschaftigt sich schwerpunktmaBig mit dem Kon sum von Jugendlichen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, und zwar sowohl in den alten als auch mit gewissen Einschrankungen in den fUnf neuen BundesHindern. 1m Vordergrund stehen Fragen nach der Hohe, der Herkunft und der Verwendung der Einkommen der Jugendlichen, nach dem Besitz von und dem Wunsch nach Konsumgiitern sowie nach den Kriterien, nach denen sie einkaufen. Weiterhin mochten wir wissen, wie die Jugendlichen ihre Freizeit verbringen, welche Musik sie gerne bOren und welche Zeitun gen und Zeitschriften sie lesen. Dariiberhinaus interessiert uns, wie die Ju gendlichen iiber die Umweltprobleme denken, was sie ffir sich selbst oder ffir die Gesellschaft ffir wichtig halten, welche Lebensstile sie pflegen und in welchen Milieus sie leben. In bezug auf diese Fragestellungen steht die Untersuchung in einer lan gen Tradition speziell auf die Jugendlichen bezogener Konsumstudien, die ffir die alten Lander der Bundesrepublik wahrend der 60er Jahre einen Ho hepunkt erreichten (vgl. u. a. Bergler 1962, Scharmann 1965, Bliicher 1966, Rosenmayr u. a. 1969), aber auch in den spateren Jahren systematisch fort gesetzt wurden (Bliicher 1975, Scharmann 1976, Jugendwerk der Deutschen Shell 1975, 1982, 1985, Bravo 1981, 1982, SinusInstitut 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, Statistisches Bundesamt 1984, Biervert 1987).
