Now known internationally through the recordings of King Sunny Ade and others, juju music originated more than fifty years ago among the Yoruba of Nigeria. This history and ethnography of juju is the first detailed account of the evolution and social significance of a West African popular music. Enhanced with maps, color photographs of musicians and dance parties, musical transcriptions, interviews with musicians, and a glossary of Yoruba terms, Juju is an invaluable contribution to scholarship and a boon to fans who want to discover the roots of this vibrant music.

This book is a solid addition to any ethnomusicology course. It's thorough and well-researched, but I found some sections a bit dense. Still, the cultural context it provides is invaluable. Definitely worth a read if you're studying African music!

Insightful Read on African Music
I just finished 'Juju: A Social History and Ethnography of an African Popular Music,' and it was eye-opening! The way it dives into the roots and evolution of Juju music is fascinating. I bought it for my music history class, and my students are loving it too!

Disappointing Presentation
I was really looking forward to this book, but it arrived with a damaged cover. While the content seems interesting, the presentation was disappointing. I expected better for an academic text, especially one covering such rich topics.
