Geboren als Sohn eines Rechtsanwalts, verbrachte er eine freudlose Kindheit; die ersten vier Jahre unter der Obhut einer Amme, vom 7. bis 14. Jahr in einer strengen Klosterschule. Bis 1816 lebte er in einem Internat in Paris. Danach studierte er Jura an der Sorbonne und arbeitete nebenbei als Gehilfe in einem Anwaltsbro. Nach Abschlu der ersten juristischen Prfung weigerte er sich, Notar zu werden. Unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen verfate er von 1822 bis 1825 ber 20 Kolportageromane, von denen er krglich lebte. Mit 23 lernte er die 45jhrige Mme. de Berry kennen, die fr lange Zeit seine mtterliche Geliebte wurde. Gewagte Spekulationen als Verleger und Drucker fhrten ihn 1827 zum Bankrott mit riesigen Schulden, die ihn lebenslang belasteten. Nach dem ersten literarischen Erfolg 1829 wurde er zum beliebten und berhmten Autor.
