Friedrich Schiller verfasste das Drama auf dem Gut Bauerbach der Henriette von Wolzogen, wo er vor der Verfolgung durch den Herzog Carl Eugen, der ihm jegliche nichtmedizinische Schriftstellerei verboten hatte, Zuflucht gefunden hatte. Es ist die Tragdie der Liebe zwischen der Tochter des Stadtmusikanten Miller, Luise und dem Sohn des Prsidenten, Major Ferdinand von Walter, einer Liebe, die zunchst ber die gesellschaftlichen Barrieren erhaben zu sein scheint und letztlich scheitert. Welche Grnde lassen sich dafr finden? Sind es in erster Linie die gesellschaftlichen Konventionen und der Standesdnkel, die eine solche Verbindung unmglich machen oder liegt das Problem nicht auch im Wesen und Charakter der Liebenden, lassen sie eine bedingungslose Liebe berhaupt zu? Diesen Gedanken weiterverfolgend ergibt sich die Frage, inwiefern der persnliche Konflikt gesellschaftlich determiniert ist. Schiller hat in Vorbereitung auf die Arbeit an Kabale und Liebe" im Dezember 1782 den Bibliothekar Wilhelm Reinwald um Shakespeares Othello" und Romeo und Julia" gebeten, weil ich etwas daraus zu meinem Stk zu schlagen gedenke" . Liebe, Eifersucht und Intrige, beide Stcke haben unverkennbar ihre Spuren hinterlassen.. im thematischen Gefge von Kabale und Liebe und bei Othello ist es gerade die persnliche Schwche, seine Eifersucht, die ihn fr die Intrige des Jago empfnglich macht, die zur Katastrophe fhrt.
