Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt einen Beitrag zu der immer wieder aufflammenden Diskussion dar, ob und in welchem Ausma Kannibalismus in den von Europern kolonisierten Gebieten tatschlich betrieben wurde. Die Untersuchung der noch erhaltenen Berichte von Augen und Zeitzeugen ber Sitten und Bruche der Bewohner Brasiliens zeigt zum einen die Konstanten innerhalb der Werke auf, zum anderen macht sie die Unterschiede deutlich, die zwischen den Quellen der einzelnen, an der Ostkste Sdamerikas engagierten europischen Nationen zu beobachten sind. Diese gerade im Hinblick auf die Anthropophagie interessanten Unterschiede hatten nicht zuletzt Auswirkungen auf die jeweilige Beurteilung der eingeborenen Bevlkerung in ihrer Gesamtheit. Die Spiegelung derartiger Zusammenhnge in einschlgigen Texten ist ebenso Gegenstand der Analyse wie ihre Umsetzung in Darstellungen der bildenden Kunst.
