In den letzten Jahren hat, bedingt durch aktuelle politische Entwicklungen ebenso wie wissenschaftliche Debatten, das Interesse an der Geschichte Ostmitteleuropas deutlich zugenommen. Ostmitteleuropa als Region der berschneidungen historischer Strukturen, als 'Herz' Europas, als Ort der Identittssuche; diese Bedeutung wird auch an der Untersuchung der Person Karel Kramr (18601937) deutlich, einem der mageblichen tschechischen Politiker des spten 19. Jahrhunderts und einer Identifikations und Polarisationsfigur der Zwischenkriegszeit. Von tschechischer Nationalitt, durch deutsche Bildung geprgt, mit franzsischen Diskursen verbunden, schuf sich Kramr ein Weltbild, in dem europische Fragestellungen, Probleme und Stereotype ihren Platz fanden. Die Autorin untersucht einzelne Elemente dieses Bildes auf ihre Wurzeln und ihre Funktion; die Arbeit ist gegliedert nach den Bereichen Nation, Fremdwahrnehmung, Demokratie und Moderne. Kramr in vieler Hinsicht fast ein 'Typus' im Sinne Lukcs eignet sich besonders als Untersuchungsobjekt einer neuen Form des historiographischen Umgangs mit Individuen: Die Einbindung einer einzelnen Person in die verschiedensten Diskurse politischer, kultureller, sozialer und persnlicher Art wird hier besonders deutlich, die Wechselwirkung von individuellen und strukturell bedingten Entwicklungen ist ebenso Thema wie Ergebnis der Arbeit.
