Fascinating history of the construction, operation and eventual demise of Katy's Northwestern District. The line radiated north from Wichita Falls, Texas out into the Texas Panhandle. The line's primary function was to haul agricultural produce with the oil and gas industry providing much needed revenue for a time. When oil and gas petered out, Katy failed to invest in maintenance and the line gradually deteriorated until its abandonment or sale to short lines. This book was one of the first serious studies of branch line railroading in the United States and represents an important contribution to railroad history. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. With extensive footnotes. 305 pages with index.
