Von den vielfltigen Mglichkeiten, sich der Novelle zu nhern und sie fr sich zu begreifen, wird hier versucht, die Mrchensymbolik der Novelle zu erkennen und auch zu entschlsseln: Die aufflligen Verweise und Verwandtschaften der Novelle zu der Mrchengattung sind sicher nicht unbeabsichtigt. Sowohl der Erzhlstil als auch die Verwendung der Zahlen die sich jedoch vor allem auf den Beginn der Geschichte konzentrieren sind Indizien fr einen dem Autor nicht nur bekannte, sondern mglicherweise auch bewusste Verwendung von Mrchenelementen, die eine bewusste oder unbewusste Verbindung schaffen, deren Ursache herausgefunden werden soll. Hierbei bietet sich ein Vergleich mit den 'Kinder und Hausmrchen' der Brder Grimm die durch ihre Sammlung den Begriff 'Mrchen' in ihrer gewohnten Form erstmalig definierten und prgten sowie mit der ebenfalls dem 'Seldwyla Zyklus' entstammenden Novelle Spiegel das Ktzchen' an, da diese Novelle ein von Keller geschriebenes Mrchen ist. Gerade im Vergleich mit diesem Mrchen lsst sich deutlich nachvollziehen, inwieweit Pankraz der Schmoller' von Mrchenelementen durchdrungen ist. Die Problematik, sich Kellers Werk durch die Parallelen zur Mrchenstruktur zu nhern, ist bekannt: Theo Loosli, Theo (Fabulierkunst und Defiguration, S. 378) schrieb: Hufig tauchen Topoi aus dem Mrchen, aus volkstmlicher Literatur, aus Romanzen und Heftchenromanen auf: Es bleibt unsicher, ob dieser bunte Lesestoff parodiert wird, oder ob er als anbiedernder, verharmlosender Erwartungshorizont weiterwirkt.
