Unter den Bedingungen aktueller methodischer und quellenkritischer Diskussion lassen sich auch die historiographischen Zeugnisse der ottonischfrhsalischen Epoche nicht im unmittelbaren Zugriff auf herrschaftstheologischen Gehalt und Herrscheridee'' auswerten. Zu fragen ist vielmehr, welcher Stellenwert den einzelnen Zeugnissen im sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Horizont der Zeit zukommt, unter welchen Bedingungen sie entstanden und von wem sie rezipiert worden sind. Die Frage nach dem jeweiligen Kontext von Herrscherbildern und Historiographie soll also erhellen, in welchen sozialen, religisen und politischen Zusammenhngen sakrale Vorstellungen vom Herrscher wirksam geworden sind, welche Interessen sie zur Geltung gebracht haben und in welchen Situationen sowie vor welchen Foren sie zur Sprache und zum Ausdruck gebracht worden sind.
