Was mag sich wohl im Kopf des Tieres abspielen? Hat er vielleicht gesehen, dass ein Kaninchen hineingekrochen ist oder hat er es zuvor gar gejagt? Oder sitzt er vielleicht da und wartet, in der Hoffnung ein Kaninchen wrde den Bau verlassen? Denkt er berhaupt etwas? Was mag sich ein Schimpanse denken, wenn er zu einem Stein greift, um eine Nuss zu knacken? Wie schaffen es Ratten immer, den krzesten Weg aus einem Labyrinth zu whlen? Fragen um den Geist der Tiere sind uerst aktuell. Die Philosophie konzentriert sich im zunehmenden Mae auf das Tier. Doch die Tendenz, neben den Menschen auch die Tiere in philosophische Kontexte zu stellen, zeichnete sich bereits bei David Hume und Arthur Schopenhauer ab, welche sich explizit zu Tieren, hinsichtlich ihres Verstandes und ihrer Vernunft, in ihren Arbeiten uerten. Aber auch die Literatur sieht das Tier aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln. In Texten, wie beispielsweise Kafkas Forschungen eines Hundes oder Ein Bericht fr eine Akademie, werden Tier nicht nur aus ihren biologischen Anlagen heraus betrachtet, sondern sie werden zu literarischen Figuren, welche teilweise menschliche Charakterzge annehmen knnen. Andere Texte wie Thomas Manns Herr und Hund. Ein Idyll. zeigen das Tier mglichst natrlich und unverndert, in diesem Fall als treuen Begleiter des Menschen. Dennoch ist der Hund auch in diesem Text ein kunstvoll gestaltetes Wesen und somit nicht das reine Abbild der Natur.
