Product DescriptionTraces the life and work of the figurative artist, discussing his portraits, landscapes, and political art, and his later works based on themes from mythology, religion, and literatureFrom School Library JournalGrade 7 Up Brief biographies accompanied by abundant finequality reproductions. Calvocoressi firmly knits together his subject's personal life, the tenor of the times, and the development of his style that combined elements of Expressionism and Symbolism. Kokoschka's robust paint handling and luminous colors are striking and provocative. This title is a muchneeded selection for high school students and a good preparation for the definitive Oskar Kokoschka edited by Klaus Schroeder and Johann Winkler (Prestel, 1991). Wilson's text is lucid, balanced, and very accessible. Phases of Matisse's amazing creative development are shown: Impressionism, Fauvism, his Grand Decorations, experimentation with Orientalism, explorations in sculpture, invention of paper cutout, and designs for the Vence Chapel. The discussion of his work is primary, but readers learn about the artist's disposition and his great spirituality. The color reproductions and photographs are extraordinary and fully crystallize Matisse's supreme talent as a colorist. While both selections are outstanding, the page numbers of the plates to which the text refers are absent in Matisse, making it difficult to locate the illustrations under discussion.
