Die heftigen Religionsstreitigkeiten, welche die Epoche des Konfessionalismus (1555/631685) auch ber den Dreiigjhrigen Krieg hinaus bestimmen, werden von zahlreichen Naturkatastrophen sowie von politischen, wirtschaftlichen und soziokulturellen Krisen begleitet, die alle Konfessionen heimsuchen und deren Aggressionen und Feindbilder noch verschrfen. Vor allem die geistliche Poesie fungiert wie der erste Teil des Bandes zeigt als Medium der vielen ngste (etwa Gottes Zorn und den Machenschaften des Teufels), aber zugleich auch als Organ zur berwindung der Furcht und zum Leben mit der Angst. Die humanistische Gelehrtenpoesie dient z.T. sogar als HeilMittel gegen die Plagen (etwa den Hexenwahn oder die Seuchen). Der zweite Teil verfolgt die Funktion der lyrischen Gebrauchsformen im Prozess der Konfessionalisierung: Wirken sie zunchst als publizistisches Instrumentarium zur polemischapologetischen Durchsetzung der religisen Bekenntnisse, so entwickelt sich nach 1600 die geistliche Poesie zum Sprachrohr von neuen und individuellen Formen der Frmmigkeit.
