Die Studie basiert auf der berlegung, da der Nationalsozialismus das zentrale Bezugsereignis der deutschen politischen Kultur bildet. Die Legitimitt des politischen Systems der Bundesrepublik bedarf einer bestndig aufs Neue zu leistenden symbolischen Abgrenzung zum Nationalsozialismus. Der Umgang mit dieser Zeit ist aus diesem Grund normativ reglementiert. Wo frhere oder gegenwrtige Verfehlungen einzelner Reprsentanten des politischen Systems ffentlich bekannt werden, entbrennen Konflikte um die normative Angemessenheit ihrer Handlungsweisen. Die Akteure solcher Konflikte ringen in ihrem Bezug auf die Vergangenheit um Macht, Legitimitt und Anerkennung in der Gegenwart. In diesen Auseinandersetzungen wird eine "legitime Sichtweise der Vergangenheit" erzeugt, die dem politischen Handeln der Gegenwart Optionen erffnet und Restriktionen auferlegt. Die Erzeugung solcher Sichtweisen bildet den Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung.
