Zur Debatte stand, ob Menschen sich konsistent genug verhalten, um mittels allgemeiner Eigenschaftsbegriffe charakterisiert werden zu konnen. Der Moderatorvariablenansatz versprach eine Losung des Konsistenzproblems. Er geht davon aus, dass Menschen sich im Grad ihrer Verhaltenskonsistenz unterscheiden. Manche Personen lassen sich anhand von Traits besser, andere weniger gut beschreiben. In dem vorliegenden Buch wird erstmals eine umfassende Bilanz des Moderatorvariablenansatzes in der Einstellungs und Personlichkeitsforschung vorgelegt. Drei Arten von Moderatorvariablen werden behandelt: qualifizierende Merkmale von Eigenschaften wie die Zentralitat einer Einstellung; Personlichkeitseigenschaften mit begrenzter Moderatorwirkung, etwa Angstabwehr; Personlichkeitseigenschaften als unspezifische Konsistenzmoderatoren, z. B. die Selbstuberwachungstendenz. Schliesslich wird erortert, ob die Befunde der Moderatorforschung es rechtfertigen, Konsistenz als eine generalisierte Personlichkeitseigenschaft anzusehen."
