Ihre scharfe Kritik an den herrschenden sozialen Verhltnissen in Russland trug wesentlich zu ihrer Bekanntheit bei auch weit ber die Grenzen ihres Landes hinaus. Trotz der Unterschiede in ihren Idealvorstellungen von einer neuen politischen ra waren sie vereint in ihrem unermdlichen Einsatz fr das Wohl des russischen Volkes. Die Briefe sind inhaltlich geprgt durch die Auseinandersetzung mit der Bauernbefreiung von 1861, den politischen Umbrchen in Europa sowie der Zukunft Russlands. Neben den Briefen Turgenjews und Kawelins werden auch einige kulturgeschichtlich uerst relevante Briefe von Iwan Sergejewitsch Aksakow an Herzen abgedruckt, die einen spannenden Einblick in die ungeachtet der politischen Gegenstze oft freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Westlern und Slawophilen ermglichen. Weiterhin enthalten ist der Briefwechsel Turgenjews mit dem ukrainischen Historiker Michail Dragomanow. Von Letzterem stammen auch das Kapitel mit persnlichen Erinnerungen an Turgenjew sowie die Erluterungen im Anhang. Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1894.
