John Murillos second book is a reflective look at the legacy of institutional, accepted violence against Blacks and Latinos and the personal and societal wreckage wrought by long histories of subjugation. A sparrow trapped in a car window evokes a mother battered by a fathers fists; a workout at an iron gym recalls a longago mentor who pushed the speaker to become something unbreakable. The presence of these and poetic forbearsGil ScottHeron, Yusef Komunyakaaprovide a context for strength in the face of danger and anger. At the heart of the book is a sonnet crown triggered by the shooting deaths of three Brooklyn men that becomes an extended meditation on the history of racial injustice and the notion of payback as a form of justice.

The selections are beautifully compiled, but I wish there were more diverse voices. Still, it’s a solid collection for anyone looking to dive into American poetry. Just wish it had more contemporary poets in it.

Mixed Feelings About the Selections
The book features some great poets, but I found a few selections a bit underwhelming. I guess I was expecting more contemporary voices. Still, it's a decent read for anyone interested in American poetry.

A Delight for Poetry Lovers
I bought this collection by Stahlecker as a gift for my daughter, who's really into American poetry. The selections are beautifully curated, and she feels inspired by the themes. It's a great addition to her bookshelf!

Not What I Expected
I thought the book would have more modern works, but most of the selections feel dated. It’s not a bad book, but it didn’t capture my interest as I hoped it would. Packaging was fine, just took a bit longer to arrive.
