Zwei Stdte werden verglichen, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein knnten: Shanghai und Freiburg. Eine Mehrmillionenstadt in Asien und eine Kleinstadt in Europa. Doch, was so verschieden zu sein scheint, ist Ausdruck der gleichen Moderne, konkret: ihrer stdtebaulichen Leitbilder. Die Geschichte der Stdte wird sorgfltig rekonstruiert unter dem Aspekt eines Leitbildes: Nachhaltigkeit. Dieses wird in Freiburg durch eine besondere politischkulturelle Konstellation immer mehr in Stadtplanung und Stdtebau realisiert, whrend es in Shanghai inzwischen den Horizont der politischen Akteure bestimmt. Die Moderne zeigt ihr Gesicht in China als reflektierte, als Zweite Moderne whrend in einem rasanten Stdtewachstum die westlichen Modelle bernommen werden, muss zugleich die inzwischen unausweichliche Kritik am Wachstumsmodell mit in die Konzeption integriert werden. Sehr ausfhrlich wird fr Shanghai untersucht, inwieweit sich Kontinuitt und Wandel der stdtebaulichen Leitbilder des Westens auch auf die moderne chinesische Stadtentwicklung ausgewirkt haben trotz der vllig anderen politischen, konomischen und gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen.
