Absicht und Inhalt Dieses Buch ist fiir Studenten der Ingenieurwissenschaft, der Physik oder der Angewandten Mathematik etwa von der Mitte ihres Studiums an gedacht. Sein Inhalt ', ird an den deutschen Universitaten und Tech nischen Hochschulen iiblicherweise nicht in einer einzigen Vorlesung behandelt, sondern findet sich verstreut in .v orlesungen wie Mechanik, Thermodynamik, Stromungslehre, Gasdynamik und Elektrodynamik. Der zu seiner DarsteHung angemessene Tensorkalkiil gehort traditionell nicht zu dem mathematischen Riistzeug, das in den Anfangervorlesungen iiber Mathematik vermittelt wird, sondern ist Gegenstand einer Spezial vorlesung fiir Mathematiker und wird dort haufig in einer Strenge und Allgemeinheit vorgetragen, die dem Nichtmathematiker den Zugang er schwert. In den zuvor genannten V urlesungen wird er deshalb in der Regel nicht verwendet, schon gar nicht fiir nichtkartesische Koordi naten. Dieses Buch nnd die ihm zngrunde liegende Vorlesung wurde durch die Erfahrullg angeregt, daB viele Studenten am Ende ihres Studiums eine zusammenfassende, einheitliche DarsteHung der Grund gleichullgen der klassischen Kuntinuumsphysik vermissen.
