Auch wenn die Sportart noch nicht mit der Popularitt von Fuball oder Tennis zu vergleichen ist, hat sich der Golfsport doch in den letzten Jahren weg vom Elitesport und hin zum Breitensport entwickelt. Im Jahr 2004 gab es bei den Mitgliedschaften in Golfclubs oder in der Vereinigung clubfreier Golfer eine Steigerung um 5,7 Prozent. Golfclubs versuchen, durch Studenten oder Familienmitgliedschaften breiteres Publikum anzusprechen. Sie bieten Schnupperkurse an, in den sich Interessierte am Golfsport ausprobieren knnen, ohne sich an einen Dresscode oder sonstige Regeln halten zu mssen. Das gewachsene Interesse am Golfen bringt gleichzeitig das Interesse mit sich, im Urlaub entweder als Nebenbeschftigung oder gezielt in Form einer Golfreise seinem Hobby nachzugehen. Dies hat auch die Reiseveranstalterbranche erkannt und Golfreisen entweder als ein Teil in ihrem Programm oder speziell durch das Auftreten als Golfreiseveranstalter umgesetzt. Wie kaum ein anderes sportliches Hobby, eignet sich das Golfen als aktive Beschftigung im Urlaub. Dies liegt an dem Golfen an sich. In der Regel wird es auf Dauer langweilig, den Heimplatz' zu spielen, und man mchte auch andere Golfpltze kennen lernen.
