Diese Studie untersucht, wie deutschsprachige Kinder im Vergleich zu Erwachsenen ambige Koordinationen wie ''Robert gab Leo ein Buch und Hans eine CD'' interpretieren. In der einen Lesart, der eine VPKoordination zugrunde liegt, erhlt Hans von Robert eine CD. In der alternativen Lesart hingegen, die eine elliptische Satzkoordination darstellt, bernimmt Hans die Rolle des Gebenden. Ambige Strukturen wie diese eignen sich in besonderer Weise, um Einblicke in die noch weitgehend ungeklrte Entwicklung kindlicher Sprachverarbeitungsmechanismen zu gewinnen. Whrend Erwachsene aufgrund automatisierter syntaktischer Verarbeitungsprozesse eine robuste Prferenz fr die syntaktisch einfachere Lesart der VPKoordination zeigen, folgen Kinder bis zum 6. Lebensjahr einer semantischen Strategie, nach der sie die Verknpfung von Propositionen, also die semantisch einfachere Lesart der Satzkoordination, favorisieren. In der bergangsphase vom primr semantik hin zum syntaxgesteuerten Verarbeitungsmodus, die sich bis ins 11. Lebensjahr erstreckt, bercksichtigen Kinder wie die Ergebnisse verschiedener behavioraler Experimente dokumentieren auch nichtsyntaktische Informationen (prosodische, lexikalischsemantische und pragmatische), die Erwachsenen im initialen Parse infolge der hochautomatisierten syntaktischen Verarbeitung nicht mehr zugnglich sind. Diese empirischen Befunde sprechen dafr, dass das Sprachverarbeitungssystem von Kindern bis weit ins Schulalter hinein weniger auf automatisierte, formalsyntaktische Bedingungen gesttzt ist als das von Erwachsenen.
